Rony Morales, Suly Úrizar, and Eliette Morales Urizar
Rony and Suly are from Joyabaj, Quiché, one of the largest migrant sending regions in Guatemala. Rony first migrated to the United States in the early 2000s, following in the footsteps of his father. Since then, his life has been divided between both places. Suly has also grown up with loved ones both here and there. Her father migrated when she was young and she’s felt a strong connection to the American Dream since childhood.
Their reality is a familiar one in Joyabaj, where everyone seems to hold migration close to heart. In town, the transnational ties are unmistakable. Painted American flags emblazon homes and decorate tombstones. Local businesses advertise services to families on both sides of the border, sending goods north and remittances south. Love is no exception to this back and forth.
